They’re not closing Solihull!

I was very happily surprised when this popped up on Twitter this morning:

Untitled

Just a few weeks ago, I had read something about how the decision as to which factory they were going to close would be announced soon and then this!  It says so much for the success of the company as of late.  I just felt like it was going to be the end of the Lode Lane plant – where most Land Rovers have been built since 1948.  I’ve visited the factory there twice for tours and great off-roading.  If you’ve never been and can get there, you should check it out:

A gallery from one of my 2007 visits:

We actually saw them doing test stampings on the Range Rover Sport body panels about a month before it had been announced – didn’t actually realize just what we were seeing at the time.  And make sure to take a drive on the Jungle Track.

Just to close – congratulations again to everyone at those plants, you’re doing a great job, and now you get to keep it going!

Not my video below, but thought it works for this post:

Here’s the official PR:

JAGUAR LAND ROVER AND TRADE UNIONS REACH LANDMARK DEAL
• Ambitious plans for new models and volume growth
• Multi-billion pound investment in the Jaguar Land Rover business
• Three manufacturing plants retained in the UK
• Thousands of new jobs in next decade – including more than 1500 in Liverpool in 2011
Following an intensive study to determine the future Jaguar Land Rover strategy for both brands and a period of negotiation with trade unions representing its workforce, Jaguar Land Rover is pleased to confirm that a landmark pay and conditions settlement has been reached.
The agreement, which trade unions representing the Jaguar Land Rover workforce will unanimously recommend to their members, sees Jaguar Land Rover revising its plans to consolidate manufacturing operations. Subject to employees endorsing this deal over the next few weeks, Jaguar Land Rover will now retain three plants in the UK – at Castle Bromwich, Solihull and Halewood – building Jaguar and Land Rover vehicles. This will lead to the creation of thousands of new jobs in Britain over the next decade as Jaguar Land Rover invests billions of pounds in the UK and significantly increases both the number of models in its range as well as overall global volumes.
"This is a triumph for all concerned," said Jaguar Land Rover Chief Executive Officer, Dr Ralf Speth. "We have ambitious plans for growth and the success of our products around the world and this agreement will allow us to accelerate and realize those plans.
"The agreement is a great deal for our workers and the company and we can now really get on with working together to achieve an even more exciting future for the Jaguar and Land Rover brands," added Dr Speth. "We have already started by
beginning to hire 1500 new employees to support the launch of the new Range Rover Evoque at our award-winning Halewood factory in Liverpool.
"Our parent company Tata supported us through the recession and our employees also made sacrifices but now we are seeing a great turnaround in the business and everyone involved – our employees; our customers and our Tata shareholders – will benefit from this agreement. This is truly the beginning of a new era for Jaguar Land Rover."
The terms of the agreement include a pay rise of 5% for employees in November this year with a further rise of at least 3% next November. New hires in the manufacturing plants will come in on lower rates of pay and receive lower shift premiums, increasing flexibility. Existing employees are unaffected. There will also be an extension of performance related pay for salaried employees.

Official Land Rover Social Media ℒℴѵℯ #landrover

Just thought I’d post up the links I’ve collected on the various official Land Rover social media sites; focusing on the US & UK.  The marketing is done independently, so they each have a collection of sites.  They are a great place to start when trying to find the latest info, videos & pictures.

Dr. Peter Mertens has joined Jaguar Land Rover as Director, Quality and the Automotive Safety Office.

If Land Rover can really start to get their ratings up in quality & reliability they really could be unstoppable.  With their continued record breaking sales, their real Achilles heel is the poor ratings they get year after year from J.D. Power & the like.  Imagine where they’d be if they could come out on the top of that list.  Let’s hope Dr. Mertens can make that happen – especially with the launch of the updated & new models over the next few years.

And here’s the official press release:

Peter Mertens has joined Jaguar Land Rover as Director, Quality and the Automotive Safety Office.

Dr. Mertens, who takes up his position with immediate effect, will assume global responsibility for Jaguar Land Rover’s quality and safety performance. He reports directly to Jaguar Land Rover Chief Executive Officer, Dr Ralf Speth.

With more than 20 years of experience in the automotive industry, Peter has worked in a wide variety of roles including product development and aftersales engineering at Mercedes Benz and more recently as Global Vehicle Line Executive at General Motors.

"Jaguar and Land Rover have an incredibly exciting future that I am very pleased to be a part of. Quality and safety are absolute priorities and my task is to take the standard even higher," commented Mertens.

Following an apprenticeship as a toolmaker Mertens completed a Masters in Industrial Engineering and Operations Research at the Virginia Polytechnic Institute in the United States. He later went on to complete his doctorate in Production Engineering and Industrial Engineering at the University of Kaiserslautern.

He is 49 years old and married with three children.

Range Rover Evoque–Live Reveal brings back Land Rover badge & a little more

So Land Rover just officially revealed the 2-door Range Rover Evoque at the Paris Auto Show.  It was short and sweet and didn’t reveal too much new info.  But there were two interesting things.

First, they did not show the 5-door model and said it wouldn’t be shown until later this year.  For those who can’t wait, here’s a video of it showing off on the Nürburgring:

And a picture of a dealer preview via Autoblog:

Second & actually more surprising, the vehicle they showed actually did have a Land Rover badge on the right-hand side of the rear tailgate.  So maybe they aren’t going to forget the brand.  I would have put up a screenshot but they still haven’t put up the replay of the video.  Here’s a shot posted by Stuart Schorr, Vice President, Communications & Public Affairs, Jaguar Land Rover North America:

Funny thing is, not even a real Range Rover has a rear badge anymore…

You can watch a replay of the reveal here:

And Phil Popham did say it would start at £35,000 – I can’t remember if that was new info or not?

Range Rover Evoque has no Land Rover badging–is this the beginning of the split? And more importantly, do I have to rename this blog?

Just going off the newly released pictures, I just realized the Evoque has no Land Rover badging at all.  Now this could just be these pictures, but I wonder if this is really the split that’s been written about – spinning off Range Rover as it’s own brand.  They already removed the rear Land Rover badge from The Range Rover & Range Rover Sport in 2010, but did keep the front grill badge.  Currently the wheel caps & steering wheels in the larger models get Land Rover badges, along with some interior door badges as well.

Looking closely at the Evoque, all those spots now display Range Rover badging, I guess they don’t want anyone mistaking it for an LR2 or Land Rover in general – may not be a bad idea.

And here is the rear badging, this design moves the model designation to the left side and looks like it’s comes in colors depending on the Evoque model you choose:

One final piece of info both the LRX & the first picture of this model they released just about one year ago both still had Land Rover badging.  I just wonder when the decision was made to drop them?
