Jaguar Land Rover NGI appears to have received a product name: InControl Touch Infotainment System

Fraternal Twins: Jaguar XE & Land Rover Discovery Sport look to be the first JLR vehicles designed and built with Jaguar Land Rover’s Next-Generation Interface (NGI), now called InControl Touch Infotainment system.  With that system and the InControl app, we might actually see official Remote Start in a Land Rover.

We got the first glimpses of it in the Jaguar XE Connected Car preview:

Whitley, UK: Jaguar Land Rover is creating cutting-edge technologies to develop new ways to give drivers higher quality, life-like graphics and information that will offer an enhanced ‘virtual’ view of the road or race track.

The ‘Jaguar Virtual Windscreen’ concept uses the entire windscreen as a display so the driver’s eyes need never leave the road.  High quality hazard, speed and navigation icons could all be projected onto the screen together. For performance drivers, imagery that could aid track driving includes:

  • Racing line and braking guidance. Virtual racing lines on the windscreen appear to be marked on the track ahead for optimum racing line, with changes in colour to indicate braking guidance.
  • Ghost car racing. Improve your lap times by racing a ‘ghost car’ visualisation of your car on a previous lap, or compete against a lap uploaded from another driver.
  • Virtual cones can be laid out on the track ahead for driver training. These could be moved as the driver’s ability improves.

Within the video, they go from an app to the cellphone interface which looks exactly as it does on a pre-InControl vehicle.  I think I wrongly assumed with InControl the entire system would be getting an interface overhaul but that may not be the case, yet.

Here’s a look at the Winston app they’re very keen on, it’s will read aloud the items coming in through various feeds.

More comments on the new Jaguar Land Rover InControl systems

Still trying to get some solid visual examples of what we can expect once the new system does roll out, until then some of the research I’ve done has been interesting.

In the official PR, one of the first bullet points was:

  • System transfers the app interface from the phone to the in-car infotainment touchscreen, and is upgradeable as new apps become available

That got me thinking back to May 2011 when Jaguar announced their Connect and View technology which literally displayed the screen from a USB connected Blackberry device on the touchscreen of the Jaguar XJ demonstrator.  The thing that really got me interested back then was the use of VNC to handle the remote video.  It’s a program I used often at the time to do remote control of various computers.  Their choice of Blackberry was very Land Rover – just slightly off the mark, although this was way off.

Lots of little bits there and lucky for us there are plenty of other JLR Infotainment people on LinkedIn as well – with more peaks of what’s to come.  One acronym that’s popping up all over is NGI or Next Generation of Infotainment.  I’m assuming that’s what we’re seeing with these latest InControl system or is it?
