Why can’t Range Rover advertisements be clever anymore? Can’t luxury and humor just get along? #rangerover

I’ve always been a big fan of those Range Rover ads from the 80’s, 90’s & even early 00’s.  They had a cleverness to them while also being informative.  As the years have progressed, it seems like Land Rover Range Rover is focused more on the boring luxury message and it wouldn’t hurt them to introduce some fun from years past.  They’ve gotten too serious with themselves, I think they have research that their buyers can’t take a joke.

To start, here are a few from the Classic era:

278And you thought your teenagers were rough on a car.

Sometimes you have to get out and push a Range Rover.224

P38a era ads, again still had a sense of humor

Early L322 stuff, starting to get more serious but still have fun.  The one on the right doesn’t work in today’s 3 model “Range Rover” world.

heaven-heavenNot A. The.

Here’s are a couple of 2010 ads, nice tag lines but not overly creative…

Eyes in the Front, Back & Side of Its Head. All the information at your fingertips. Literally.

And the print advertisements aren’t alone in this:

Range Rover does the Cha-Cha

I won’t complain about all the somewhat current ads, I loved this entire campaign:

And this one on “The Range Rover” – there really was only one back then:

And a more recent showing that Land Rover still has some of that old spirit – here’s a great UK ad for the Defender:

Who exactly is watching this Evoque slideshow on YouTube?? #rangeroverevoque

After seeing other slideshow type YouTube videos, I decided to create a simple one, with just the official Range Rover Evoque photos released at the time, I added in a YouTube provided soundtrack and put the video up on September 21st.

As of December 6th, it has over 10,000 views – which I think is actually pretty crazy, I know I’d prefer to see the actual pictures instead of something like this.  But that’s not why I’m writing this today.  It’s the actual analytics on the video from YouTube, specifically the demographics:

rre-demo

While in no way scientific and really just a sample of YouTube viewers; I wonder how much this goes along with what Land Rover Range Rover is seeing in regard to who they’re targeting it for.

Below are the breakdowns for Women vs. Men.

Again, I don’t know the general demographic for YouTube users, but 10,000 views seems like a good size sample for a car slideshow.

Anyway, I found it interesting…

Land Rover’s Freelander 2 SD4 Sport Limited Edition tweaks the Freelander in the right direction #landrover

Land Rover is really busy putting out these UK only special editions.  This time it’s the Freelander 2 that’s getting the treatment.  I actually don’t mind the Freelander or the LR2 as it’s called here in the States.  But after the big refresh for the other Land Rover & Range Rovers in 2010, the interior really needs an update – they’re still even using the old steering wheel.  But overall, it’s a comfortable vehicle that’s not bad to drive.

This Sport Limited Edition adds the usual interior & exterior tweaking where they play with the colors  on the exterior trim  (door handles, grills, vents, etc…) and add in interesting leather combos.  Wheels look good too, they’re 19” and called Shadow Chrome.  And I think I like the red interior trim strip on the dash as opposed to the faux wood trim – blacked out front grill also really gives the vehicle a stronger look, maybe it should become standard?  Enjoy.

One Millionth Range Rover, one month late #rangerover

1mrr

I had been waiting for some media for this and just forgot to get it posted.  Back on November 4th, Land Rover produced the one millionth Range Rover, it quickly went to a charity auction for Help for Heros, after being accepted by Jeremy Clarkson of Top Gear on behalf of the charity.

What I’m not clear on is what exactly made up that one million number.  I think they mean just Range Rovers, but they do mention that the Range Rover Sport has sold 300,000 units since 2005.  Does the 1M include that or is it just real Range Rovers?  I know they like us to think of them all as Range Rovers.

And finally, here’s Jeremy Clarkson talking about the Range Rover for 2010:

LAND ROVER DONATES THE ONE MILLIONTH RANGE ROVER TO HELP FOR HEROES

  • The one millionth Range Rover has been built at the company’s Solihull Plant
  • Land Rover employees, enthusiasts and owners celebrate landmark build
  • One millionth model to be auctioned for Help for Heroes
  • Jeremy Clarkson, Patron of Help for Heroes, receives car on behalf of the charity
